Weekly Photo Challenge: Happy Place

We have a lot of happy places as a family. One is a hidden gem in the Western Cape called; Grootwinterhoek in Afrikaans- which translates to Big Winter Corner in English.

Ancient Bushman drawings outside a cave

There is no or limited network availability which means you are cut off from the world. It is quiet and there are mountain streams galore. It is rich with history and even have ancient caves with Bushman drawings. The area is known to even have a few mountain leopards.

I miss it…I hope to visit there soon again!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Change

Change~ {Undergo a change; become different in essence; losing one’s or its original nature}

People, it is official…I am getting older! As scary as it seems sometimes…I am changing, and my body  too!

These pics were both taken at my dear friend Jo’s parties. The one in 2012 was at her 40th, and the one below at her daughter’s 8th birthday earlier this year.

Skin problems were cleverly disguised with the wonderful art on my face! Check the big pimple on my eyelid! I personally prefer the curly hair!

Weekly Photo Challenge: From Every Angle

Angle ~ {The space between two lines or planes that intersect; the inclination of one line to another; measured in degrees or radians; A biased way of looking at or presenting something}

Better late than never hey? I have been neglecting to post for a few weeks now…:(

Here is my entry for this week’s challenge. It was taken last year at a kiddies birthday party.

A great recollection of my Daughter playing putt-putt with her Dad.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Early Bird

Early bird~ {A person who gets up very early in the morning}

I must confess, I am not a morning person. As of late, I have had to get used to waking up at 05h00am.

I agree that daybreak is the most beautiful time of the day. With the dawning of the first light, the promise of a new day breaks.

Job 38:41 (God’s confronts Job)

“Have you commanded the morning since your days began,
And caused the dawn to know its place,”

Phillie early morning

One of my favourite pictures taken early one morning as I just worked through the night completing my final assignment while studying.  It was taken in Philadelphia, Western Cape.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Afloat

Afloat: ~{Aimlessly drifting; Borne on the water; floating}

Visiting water bodies…especially the ocean will always remain a favourite pastime of mine. Here are a few of my absolute pics in submission of this week’s challenge:

The following two pics were taken at Churchhaven, Langebaan, Western Cape. It is a tiny fishing village located in the West Coast National Park. One of the most serene places I have been to.

Dreamy days spent fishing

This one was taken on holiday in Nelspruit or now known as Mbombela, in Mpumalanga. We regularly visit this wonderful place. Floating in this picture is our friend’s daughter, Kenya. 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: Scale

Scale ~ {The ratio between the size of something and a representation of it}

I love this week’s theme!

Last year October, we visited the Union Buildings in Pretoria, our nation’s capital. It is always a heartwarming experience.

Besides the majesty of the Union Buildings, an impressive statue of Mandela regally stands in the gardens below.

The statue of Nelson Mandela at the Union Buildings in Pretoria stands 9m tall. He has one leg slightly in front of the other to demonstrate a nation on the move, and his arms are outstretched as if embracing the nation

Weekly Photo Challenge: Shadowed

Shadowed ~ {Filled with shade}

Sunset - A city beyond

Sunset – A city beyond

This picture was taken at sunset in Graskop, Mpumalanga during the holidays. We were visiting the Panorama Rest Camp. As were driving out, this breath-taking view caused us to pull over. I had to get a picture. The silhouette of the clouds almost looked like a city skyline. The sunlight and absence thereof cast wonderful shadows. I wonder what lies beyond.

“I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.” Revelation 21:2

Weekly Photo Challenge: Good Morning

Good morning {A conventional expression of greeting or farewell}

What a way to start a morning! Sunrise on the patio of one of the homes we stayed at a few years ago.  Incidentally this village, called Philadelphia (on the Cape West Coast), was featured on a TV program this week.  Nostalgia all around!

Weekly Photo Challenge: In the background

Background ~ {The part of a scene (or picture) that lies behind objects in the foreground}

Weekly Photo Challenge: From above

From above ~ {from a higher place}

Last winter I experienced my first snowstorm!  It was really unusual as we don’t generally have such severe weather in winter in Jozi.  It was really exciting!

A really special one…at the beach with my daughters.  Toes all around!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Culture

Culture ~ {The attitudes and behaviour that are characteristic of a particular social group or organization}

Rugby ~ {A form of football played with an oval ball}

The people of my country are sports crazy.  Considering our volatile past, the different cultures always looked to music and sports as an outlet.  In an act of bravery, our then President, Nelson Mandela united the National Rugby Team and ultimately united a nation when we won the 1995 Rugby World Cup.

A proud moment!  Nelson Mandela congratulating the captain, Francois Pienaar.

My husband is a huge rugby fan.  In August 2010, the All-Blacks played South Africa at Soccer City.  I went along for fun.

It was electrifying to see all the cultures come together to support our National Team.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Color

Color ~ {A visual attribute of things that results from the light they emit, transmit or reflect}

As I locked the front door earlier tonight, I spotted an interesting visitor on my gate: a praying mantis.

Mantis ~ {Predacious long-bodied large-eyed insect of warm regions; rests with forelimbs raised as in prayer}

pageIt was just as interested in me as I was in him.  I love the angle of the gate and his body movements.  It definitely added some color to my otherwise dull Friday night!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Lunchtime

Lunchtime ~ {The customary or habitual hour for eating lunch}

Photo 2012-11-07 7 51 55 AM

This is my favourite meal to have for lunch.  It is a green salad tossed in olive oil and some yummy sardines.  I usually eat it with some dry crackers.

I’ve been trying to turn over a new leaf for some time now.  Literally and figuratively…trying to eat more healthy.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Kiss

Kiss ~ [Touch with the lips or press the lips (against someone’s mouth or other body part) as an expression of love, greeting, etc.] ; [The act of caressing with the lips (or an instance thereof)]

Usually kissing happens in private when no camera’s are snapping!  Or at least for me and hubby! 🙂

The only Kodak moment we have kissing is on our wedding day…more than 10 years ago.

I remember there was a whole lot of kissing going on that day!  Who doesn’t love kissing! 🙂

Weekly Photo Challenge: Love

Love ~ [Have a great affection or liking for] ; [A strong positive emotion of regard and affection]

My two daughters are inseparable.  They embody the real essence of love.  They fight, they make up but they love each other to bits.

I love them…they’re a part of me.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Beyond

Beyond: (On the farther side from the observer) ; (Farther along in space, time or degree)

I took this pic while traveling from Jozi to Cape Town. I love the mountains and all the detail my Sony digicam picked up. And the window was extremely clean!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Illumination

Illumination ~ [The luminous flux incident on a unit area] ; [A condition of spiritual awareness; divine illumination – “follow God’s illumination”]

I made this lampshade.  When taking the picture I tried all the settings on my digicam.

With this picture, I put off all the lights.  In the background you see a tiny speck of light.  That’s the light-bulb reflecting on the glass pane.

John 1:5 “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.”

Weekly Photo Challenge: Silhoette

Silhoette: An outline of a solid object (as cast by its shadow) lineation, outline

I haven’t posted a challenge in a long while. This week we took a trip home for a wedding.

* What would a trip home be without a visit to the beach?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Urban

Urban ~ {Located in or characteristic of a city or city life}

I love this picture.  I took it while in transit in Jozi CBD.  I love the activity of the hawkers and remember seeing people braiding hair close by.  Also love the very cool earrings the girl is wearing.

As some of you might have read, I am part of a group of adventure-seeking, hungry-for-history, hikers.  We explore the city of Joburg on a bi-monthly basis.  This one I took while on one of those hikes.  It is a bucket-list wall where you can chalk down your dreams and aspirations.  These boys live in the city and this is their playground.

One of the many skyline pictures I have been taking these last few weeks.  This is my view from our new home in Kensington.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Inside

Better late than never they say!  The weeks are just flying by and my days are full to the brim!

Inside ~ {Internal to, not outside; located in the bounds of}

This picture was taken in March at the house we stayed at previous to this one.  As I write, we are busy moving again.  So in a week’s time this sentence will read: “This picture was taken in March at the house we stayed before the previous one!”  How’s that!

If you look closely, you’ll see two sheets of glass.  Sandwiched between the glass you’ll see weed growing.  These stubborn plants will find anyway to grow…inside anything!

I love the contrast of the blue sky and clouds as background.  This house is situated in Roodepoort which means: “red valley”  It is clear why…check that red soil.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fleeting Moment

Fleeting ~ {Lasting for a markedly brief time} : Moment ~ {A particular point in time}

In 2007 my family and I visited a farm in Redelinghuys, Sandveld, West Coast for a weekend.  We had a great time and the farm naturally had all kinds of animals.  I shared a fleeting moment with this curious ostrich who just happened to move into the frame of the fence at the right time:

….and then he moved on to join his fellow fury friends.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Close

Close ~ { Not far away in position, relationship or time}

This morning I got up earlier than usual.  Amazing what beauty you sometimes miss by sleeping late.  These pigeons caught my eye immediately.  They nestled together in the early morning sun to keep warm.
